Archbishop Kawas named Ambassador for Peace by UPF in Washington D.C.
Archbishop Leonard Bature Kawas, founder of Harvest World Ministries, has been appointed an Ambassador for Peace by the Universal Peace Federation (UPF) during a high-profile ceremony held in Washington, D.C., on June 20, 2026.
The event attracted global dignitaries, including government officials, religious leaders, entertainers and business executives, all gathered to promote dialogue and strengthen cooperation in peacebuilding and interfaith relations.
The President of the UPF, Ambassador Dr. Michael Jenkins, who attended the ceremony, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to uniting leaders across sectors to address global challenges. He commended the newly appointed ambassadors for their service and encouraged them to translate shared values into practical initiatives that support communities.
The Ambassadors for Peace initiative, launched in 2001 by the late Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han, recognises individuals who exemplify the principle of “living for the sake of others” through service, reconciliation and humanitarian work.
Archbishop Kawas was honoured for his longstanding contributions to reconciliation, community development and interfaith dialogue. In his new role, he joins a global network of peace advocates working to advance UPF’s mission through diplomacy, education and grassroots engagement.
The ceremony featured keynote addresses and goodwill messages from several UPF leaders and international dignitaries, who emphasised the importance of inclusive and collaborative approaches to addressing conflict, inequality and social division.
According to organisers, the initiative also included the appointment of actors, former public officials, clergy and private sector leaders, all committed to supporting peace-oriented programmes and social development projects.
Speaking after receiving the honour, Archbishop Kawas called for stronger partnerships among faith-based organisations, governments and the private sector in promoting global peace.
> “Peace is more than the absence of conflict; it is the presence of justice, dialogue, and hope,” he said.
“I accept this responsibility with humility and renewed determination to work for the common good.”
He expressed appreciation to the UPF for the recognition and to supporters of his ministry and humanitarian efforts.
Organisers added that the Ambassadors for Peace will participate in upcoming regional consultations and initiatives focused on youth empowerment, interfaith dialogue and poverty reduction.
The ceremony concluded with renewed commitments from participants to turn dialogue into concrete actions aimed at fostering peace and sustainable development worldwide.
