Step-by-step guide to apply for birth, death certificates as a Nigerian online

Published

on

The Federal Government, through the National Population Commission (NPC), has launched VitalReg, a digital self-service platform that allows Nigerians to register births and deaths, apply for birth attestation, correct registration records and verify certificates online without first visiting a registration centre.

The initiative is part of the Federal Government’s efforts to digitise civil registration services, improve access to legal identity documents and reduce the time and paperwork associated with traditional registration processes. The platform became operational nationwide on July 1, 2026 under the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system.

Services Available on VitalReg

Through the platform, Nigerians can access several civil registration services, including:

  • Birth registration
  • Death registration
  • Birth attestation
  • Record correction
  • Certificate verification
  • Other civil registration services

The platform is designed to make it easier for citizens to obtain and manage official civil registration records from anywhere with internet access.

How to Apply for Birth or Death Registration Online

Applicants can complete their registration by following these steps:

Step 1: Visit the VitalReg Portal

Access the National Population Commission’s VitalReg self-service platform through:

Step 2: Create an Account or Sign In

New users should register by providing the required details, including their name, email address, phone number and password. Existing users can simply log in to their accounts.

Choose the appropriate service, such as:

  • Birth registration
  • Death registration
  • Birth attestation

Step 4: Enter the Required Information

Complete the application form by providing accurate personal and registration details.

Applicants are advised to ensure that all information matches their supporting documents to avoid delays or corrections.

Step 5: Review and Submit

Carefully review the information entered before submitting the application.

Where applicable, applicants may be required to upload supporting documents or complete additional verification steps depending on the service requested.

Step 6: Track Your Application

Applicants can monitor the progress of their requests or verify issued certificates through the available options on the VitalReg platform.

Need Assistance?

Individuals who experience challenges using the online platform can visit any National Population Commission registration centre nationwide for guidance and support.

The Commission said the digital platform complements existing physical registration centres and is intended to make civil registration services more accessible to Nigerians.

Why Birth and Death Registration Matters

Birth and death certificates remain important legal documents required for access to several public and private services, including:

  • School admissions
  • Healthcare services
  • Passport applications
  • National identity registration
  • Banking and financial services
  • Government programmes
  • Legal and administrative processes

The NPC urged Nigerians to take advantage of the digital platform to register vital events promptly and maintain accurate civil records.
