Bandits storm Zamfara community, kill 11 in fresh attack
Eleven persons have been confirmed dead following a bandit attack on Ware community in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The attack occurred on Thursday when armed men reportedly stormed the village and opened fire on residents.
A member of the Zamfara State House of Assembly representing Tsafe West Constituency, Amiru Ahmad Keta, confirmed the incident on Saturday, disclosing that eleven bodies had so far been recovered and conveyed to Keta village for burial.
According to the lawmaker, residents attempting to evacuate more bodies were forced to retreat after the attackers returned and chased them away, making it difficult to determine the full extent of the casualties.
He said the recovered victims were transported in wheelbarrows to Keta for burial.
“On Thursday, the bandits entered Ware village and killed unspecified numbers of people; so far, eleven dead bodies have been conveyed to Keta village.
I have the short video; they were taken in wheelbarrows to Keta for burial,” Keta stated.
He added that no security agency had been able to access Ware village since the attack began, further compounding efforts to assess the situation.
The lawmaker also revealed that a Nigerian Army Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) was destroyed after running into an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along the Keta-Danjibga road in Tsafe Local Government Area.
The troops were reportedly escorting civilian vehicles along the high-risk route when the explosion occurred.
Following the blast, the soldiers were said to have withdrawn from the area, after which the attackers allegedly returned and set the damaged vehicle ablaze.
Zamfara remains one of the North-Western states severely affected by banditry, with attacks often linked to violent competition over resources and criminal activities.
Other states in the region, including Kebbi, Kaduna, Sokoto, and Katsina, have also experienced similar violence.
On February 18, gunmen reportedly killed dozens of people and destroyed seven villages in coordinated raids in Kebbi State.
Members of the Lakurawa group attacked communities in the Bui district of Arewa at about 1:15 p.m., according to the Kebbi State Police Command spokesman, Bashir Usman.
Usman said scores of residents were killed when locals from Mamunu, Awasaka, Tungan Tsoho, Makangara, Kanzo, Gorun Naidal, and Dan Mai Ago mobilised to resist the attackers.
A resident of Kanzo claimed at least 35 people were killed during the assault, which also saw the attackers rustle cattle.
Authorities are yet to provide an updated casualty figure as security operations continue in the affected areas.
