The governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has announced Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, son of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as his running mate for the 2027 governorship election.

Mustapha Kwankwaso, who recently served as Kano State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, is the immediate past member of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s cabinet.

His nomination was confirmed in a brief statement on Monday by the spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Habibu Saleh Mohammed, who disclosed that the younger Kwankwaso had been unveiled as the deputy governorship candidate of the NDC.

“HE Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo unveiled Hon. Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as running mate for 2027 Governorship Election,” the statement read.

Mustapha had earlier resigned from the Kano State Executive Council following political tensions between Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and his father, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.

In his resignation statement, he described his departure from government as a difficult decision taken “with a heavy heart,” while expressing gratitude to the governor for the opportunity to serve.

He also praised the administration’s youth-focused policies, particularly in sports development, expressing optimism that ongoing programmes would continue to benefit young people in the state.
