BREAKING: Skypower Express aircraft crashes at Sam Mbakwe Airport in Imo State
A Cessna 172 aircraft operated by Skypower Express crashed on Tuesday evening at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, though fortunately, no fatalities have been reported.
The aircraft, registered as 5N-ASR, was en route from Kaduna International Airport to Port Harcourt International Airport when the crew declared an emergency, prompting a diversion to Owerri. The plane crashed in the approach area of Runway 17 around 8:00 p.m. local time, with four people on board.
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed that there was no post-crash fire, and normal flight operations at the airport resumed shortly after the incident. A statement from NSIB Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, noted that efforts are underway to recover the aircraft for a detailed wreckage examination.
NSIB Director-General Captain Alex Badeh Jr. expressed sympathies to Skypower Express and welcomed the absence of casualties. “We express our deepest sympathies to the management of Skypower Express and are glad that no fatalities have been reported so far. Our team is coordinating with authorities to secure the site,” he said.
The bureau has activated its protocols in line with its mandate to investigate the incident, ensuring that safety measures are thoroughly reviewed. The prompt response by airport emergency services prevented further escalation, highlighting the efficiency of aviation safety protocols in Nigeria.
