‘Come and save democracy in Nigeria’ – PDP Chairman Turaki begs Trump
Tension escalated at the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday as a confrontation between rival factions erupted into chaos, with security operatives firing gunshots and releasing teargas to disperse party members.
Amid the disorder, factional National Chairman Tanimu Turaki (SAN) made a dramatic appeal to U.S. President Donald Trump, urging him to intervene in what he described as a grave threat to democracy in Nigeria.
“I want to call on President Trump; what is at stake is not just genocide against Nigerian Christians. He should come and save democracy in Nigeria.”, PDP National Chairman, Tanimu Turaki (SAN), speaking at the party headquarters.
There was heightened tension at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national headquarters, Wadata Plaza, Abuja, on Tuesday as rival factions attempted to hold parallel meetings, leading to a chaotic confrontation.
The National Working Committee (NWC) elected at the Ibadan convention and the faction loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, both fixed their meetings for the same day.
Samuel Anyanwu, National Secretary of the pro-Wike faction, arrived early with his group. Not long after, members of the Tanimu Turaki-led faction also reached the secretariat but were denied entry by security personnel.
Two governors from the Turaki camp reportedly forced their way into the building. Security operatives responded with gunshots and teargas to disperse others attempting to enter, sending people running for safety and causing confusion around the complex.
Before the Turaki faction arrived, Anyanwu told journalists that the heavy security presence was a standard measure to prevent disorder during Board of Trustees (BoT) and National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings.
He confirmed that his faction was ready to proceed with its scheduled sessions.
