Turaki-led PDP faction shifts NWC meeting after boiling moments at Party HQ
Kabiru Turaki, national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says the party has postponed its inaugural National Working Committee (NWC) meeting earlier scheduled for Tuesday in Abuja.
Speaking to journalists after he gained access to the PDP headquarters at Wadata Plaza, Turaki said the shift became necessary because of “actions of those undermining democracy and progress.” The meeting will now hold on Wednesday, November 19.
Turaki, who was accompanied by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, commended the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) commissioner of police for providing security that enabled the party leadership to enter the secretariat.
He explained that he had earlier briefed the commissioner about the planned NWC meeting and also drew his attention to flyers circulating on social media announcing NEC and BoT meetings by persons whom he said were no longer recognised members of the party.
He added that the police kept their word by ensuring the leaders could access the premises and address journalists.
Turaki thanked party stakeholders for their support, noting that the PDP remains committed to unity and stability.
He said governors, national assembly members, former governors, ex-ministers, BoT members, state chairmen and members of the immediate past NWC had shown solidarity by accompanying him to the secretariat.
He said the party is focused on rebuilding its strength and must first secure national cohesion as it works toward returning to power.
The postponement comes amid a deepening leadership crisis that has split the PDP into factions, with Turaki’s camp insisting it remains the legitimate leadership after the expulsion of former national secretary Samuel Anyanwu.
The PDP headquarters was the theatre of chaos on Tuesday as supporters of both factions clashed over access to the Wadata Plaza complex.
