CSO urges EFCC to enforce forfeiture order on disputed Abuja properties

A civil society organisation, the Initiative Against Human Rights Abuse & Torture (INAHURAT), has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately enforce an interim forfeiture order issued by a Federal High Court in Abuja over some disputed properties in the capital city.

The group, made up of lawyers and led by human rights activist Dr. Maxwell Opara, said Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court, Abuja granted the interim forfeiture order on properties located in the Guzape and Katampe areas of Abuja.

According to the group, the order followed a case marked FHC/ABJ/CS/151/2026, which was filed against a developer, Mrs. Rebecca Godwin-Isaac, over alleged land fraud.

Briefing journalists in Abuja, the rights body said the court order was meant to protect the properties while a criminal case on the alleged fraud is still ongoing before the court.

It, however, alleged that notwithstanding the order, the subject property at Plot 4022, Guzape District, Abuja, had continued to be developed in gross violation of extant laws.

Consequently, INAHURAT urged the EFCC to enforce the court order, insisting it would boost the confidence of the nominal complainant, an octogenarian widow, Mrs. Colleen Mero Yesufu, in the judicial process.

“The EFCC chairman does not have an option other than to comply with the order of the court. When an order is made, you don’t choose which one to obey and which one not to obey.

“Therefore, we are calling on the EFCC chairman to do the needful to preserve the res (subject matter) and prevent further dissipation of an asset already subject to judicial restraint,” the rights body stated.

Besides, the group said it has petitioned the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, as well as the Minister of Interior, over the alleged issuance of a fresh international passport to the developer whose travel documents were earlier seized by the court as part of her bail conditions.
