Demolition: Lagos Assembly stops building projects in Makoko, Shogunle
The Lagos State House of Assembly has announced a temporary ban on construction activities in Makoko and Shogunle communities, pending the completion of reconciliation talks with residents within the next two weeks.
The decision followed discussions on development concerns in the affected areas.
Lawmakers also adopted the recommendation of the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on E-GIS, Dr. Olajide Babatunde, which introduced a 250-metre setback from the Third Mainland Bridge and an additional 250-metre buffer beyond the power line corridor.
This directive means that no form of building or physical development will be allowed within the marked zones.
Speaking during a committee meeting with leaders from Makoko and Shogunle, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who was represented by Majority Leader Mr. Noheem Adams, explained that the Assembly is working together with the Lagos State Building Control Agency and the E-GIS Office to address the matter.
Adams urged stakeholders to unite and take decisive steps to address residents’ needs, noting that the committees must include women, youths, students and traditional leaders to help secure a lasting solution.
He added that the State Executive Council was finalising compensation arrangements for affected residents while dialogue continued.
Reacting after the meeting, te Executive Chairman of Yaba Local Council Development Area, Mr. Bayo Adefuye, expressed satisfaction with the resolutions reached, stating that relief materials and palliatives were already being distributed by both the state and local governments.
Adefuye said the Assembly committee’s plan to conclude its assignment within two weeks appeared achievable. He urged residents to comply strictly with the directives and warned community leaders against pursuing personal interests that could undermine peace and the resolution process.
