Former Kano Gov, Shekarau dumps PDP, joins APC
Former Kano State Governor, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party, citing what he described as a strategic political realignment ahead of future political engagements.
In a resignation letter dated April 19, 2026, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Giginyu Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, Shekarau said his decision takes immediate effect.
He explained that the move followed extensive consultations within his political bloc and was part of efforts to reposition for continued political participation under a different platform.
Shekarau thanked party officials at the ward level, noting that his exit was done in appreciation of the support he had received while in the party.
The letter was also copied to the Kano State PDP leadership and the Nassarawa Local Government Area PDP Chairman, formally notifying all relevant party structures.
His resignation comes amid ongoing internal tensions within the PDP and follows months of speculation over his political future. Earlier in April, during a visit by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, Shekarau had hinted at his imminent departure from the opposition party, describing it as weakened by internal crises.
While there is speculation that he may be considering a move to the ruling party, Shekarau has not officially confirmed his next political destination.
