“Holy, Holy, Nnamdi Kanu is another saviour,” Traders chant as protest erupts over Onitsha Market closure
Traders at the Onitsha Main Market on Tuesday staged a protest against the Anambra State Government following the shutdown of the commercial hub by Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
The protesters, made up largely of market men and women, were heard chanting slogans in praise of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, as they voiced anger over the government’s action.
Videos circulating on social media showed traders singing, “Holy, Holy, Nnamdi Kanu is another saviour,” while condemning the one-week closure of the market.
Very Nigerian recalls that Governor Soludo ordered the immediate closure of Onitsha Main Market on Monday after traders reportedly defied the state government’s sit-at-home directive.
The governor announced the shutdown during an unscheduled visit to the market, describing the defiance as unacceptable and warning that government would not tolerate actions capable of undermining public order and economic stability.
The decision has, however, sparked outrage among traders, many of whom insist they were unfairly punished and accused the government of worsening their economic hardship.
Onitsha Main Market is one of the largest commercial centres in West Africa, and its closure has significant implications for trade and livelihoods within and outside Anambra State.
