‘I am not a desperate politician, I’ll stay in PDP’, says Abba Moro

Abba Moro, the Senate Minority Leader, has dismissed rumours about his possible exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying he has no plan to defect.

Moro made the statement on Wednesday during a consultative meeting with members of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC), led by the party’s national chairman, Kabiru Turaki.

His assurance comes at a time the opposition party has been facing a wave of defections since the beginning of the year, raising concerns about internal unity and stability within the PDP.

The lawmaker said he and some members of the PDP are not desperate politicians and would not abandon the party because of intimidation or political pressure.

“I want to inform you, Mr chairman, that many of us here are not poor or desperate politicians. We are in PDP to stay. We are not in PDP for the sake of using the platform to win elections, and certainly not fixated on the 2027 elections. So, no amount of intimidating scenarios will push us out of PDP,” Moro said.

The senate minority leader, who described the PDP as the only viable platform for democratic governance in Nigeria, urged members of the newly elected NWC to work with party leaders to ensure unity and cohesion.

“The national convention has come and gone. So, this responsibility falls on us, especially you (national chairman) and other members of the NWC, to salvage the situation. Yours is a very herculean task,” he said.

In his remarks, Turaki said party leaders are working towards repositioning the PDP.

“Our goal is to save this country from anti-democratic forces and salvage our multiparty democracy. The 2027 general elections are not about defections, but about Nigerians,” he said.

Turaki commended Moro and other PDP senators for what he described as their principled stance, calling them “pillars of the party”.

Also speaking, Adolphus Wabara, chairman of the PDP board of trustees (BoT), congratulated the party on the recent conduct of its national convention in Ibadan, Oyo state, and pledged the BoT’s support for the Turaki-led NWC.

“From the early days of their tenure, it appears that our party is being repositioned, structures are being strengthened, and confidence is being restored across the federation,” Wabara said.

He called for unity and reconciliation within the party, noting that the moment called for healing.
