‘I respect Tinubu, I can never abuse him’ – Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said he respects President Bola Tinubu, stressing that his criticism of the administration will remain focused on policies and performance rather than personal attacks.

Obi made the statement on Friday while speaking at the 2026 All Nigeria Editors’ Conference in Enugu, held under the theme, “The Ballot, the Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive.”

The former Anambra State governor was addressing the controversy surrounding the state’s debt profile and the broader need for accountability in public office.

Obi said political disagreements should not be turned into personal attacks, adding that he would not insult or abuse Tinubu or any other political office holder, even when expressing disagreement with their policies.

He maintained that political leaders should be assessed based on their actions, policies and performance, rather than through personal attacks or abusive language.

“I cannot abuse any governor. I cannot abuse anybody in government. I don’t need to abuse people even in federal government. I’ve never abused anybody. Who has seen me calling President Tinubu’s name? Never! I will not do that. He’s the President of the country, he has all my respect,” Obi said.

He, however, said respect for public office holders should not prevent citizens and the media from questioning their decisions and performance.

“But I can argue on other issues, whether you’re doing well, or you’re not doing the right thing. That is allowed,” he said.

Obi said the character and conduct of political leaders could influence the values of the wider society, urging editors to scrutinise politicians based on their records, statements and qualifications.

“We must, because the leader… the character and behavior of the leader exemplifies the value of the society. And the leader must live it,” he said.
