Journalists are Watchdogs, not Targets — NUJ FCT Chair, Grace Ike warns
Comrade Grace Ike, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Correspondents Chapel, has called for an immediate end to violence, intimidation, and harassment against journalists in Nigeria.
Speaking during a radio interview to mark the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, Ike highlighted the growing threats reporters face, including violence, harassment, arbitrary detention, sexual assault, and gender discrimination, all of which, she said, undermine press freedom.
She noted that the NUJ FCT Council has zero tolerance for the intimidation of journalists and condemned the frequent use of excessive force by state actors and security agencies.
“We demand public apology and accountability from perpetrators to protect journalists,” Ike declared, reaffirming the council’s firm stance against any form of abuse, especially targeting female journalists.
Describing journalists as “watchdogs of society,” Ike stressed the importance of transparency, collaboration, and respect for media practitioners.
She recalled the NUJ FCT Press Week held in July 2025, which focused on reinforcing the need for a free and safe press environment.
According to her, the NUJ FCT remains committed to ensuring that journalists can perform their duties without fear or intimidation, as part of a broader effort to end impunity, violence, and harassment against members of the press in Nigeria.
