A 30-year-old man, identified as Sunday Ejor, has been arrested for allegedly killing his live-in lover, Lucy Moshe Igu, and hiding her body in a bush in Ogoja Local Government Area.

The victim, 26, was said to be a native of Abrumbede, Ibil, in Ekajuk area of Northern Cross River State, while the suspect is from Nwang community, Ekajuk Ward 2.

Residents said the couple’s relationship had been troubled by frequent quarrels, largely fuelled by allegations of infidelity reportedly made by the suspect against the deceased.

According to accounts from the community, the suspect allegedly attacked the woman during the night and into the early hours of the day, dragged her to a nearby stream, and inflicted severe machete cuts on her head, face and neck, leading to her death.

He was further accused of wrapping the body in her wrapper and dragging it into the bush in an attempt to conceal the crime.

Suspicion reportedly grew after the woman was not seen for several hours, prompting some youths to question the suspect. He allegedly led them to the location where the body was hidden before an angry mob attempted to lynch him.

Police officers later intervened, rescued the suspect and took him into custody.

The incident sparked tension at the police station as women from both communities reportedly clashed over the matter. Some demanded that the suspect be handed over to them, while others insisted the law should take its course.

Confirming the arrest, Police Public Relations Officer Sunday Eitokpah said officers responded swiftly after receiving the report, arrested the suspect and prevented mob action.

He added that the victim’s remains had been deposited at the General Hospital Ogoja mortuary, while the matter would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
