The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State has challenged Governor Caleb Mutfwang to reveal the identities of those allegedly pressuring him to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling APC.

Governor Mutfwang had over the weekend claimed that some APC members approached him to join their party.

Speaking during an event at the Government House banquet hall in Jos, the governor said he would only consider such a move if it aligned with divine direction and the will of the people.

“It is not a lie that they are putting pressure on me. But I told them that only two people would authorise me to change my party. One is the God of heaven, and the other is you, the people,” he said.

The governor added that many APC members would prefer his defection despite publicly opposing it. “The truth is that 60 to 70 per cent of APC members in the state would be glad to have us in their party. They are just biting their fingers because they know I won’t join them,” Mutfwang said.

Reacting on Monday, the APC’s acting publicity secretary in the state, Shittu Bamaiyi, dismissed the governor’s claim as “self-denial,” alleging that Mutfwang was only trying to divert attention from his administration’s shortcomings.

Bamaiyi argued that if the governor had performed to the expectations of Plateau residents, there would be no reason to discuss defection or political alignment.

“If he truly meant well for his supporters and the state, he should have courageously named those pressuring him and explained why,” Bamaiyi stated.

He added that it was a “big minus” for a sitting governor when an opposition party publicly rejected his possible defection, especially as parties usually seek strong political figures ahead of future elections.
