Newly appointed Nigeria’s envoys Fani-Kayode, Omokri, clash with Dele Momodu over Tinubu
A political storm erupted on social media as Femi Fani-Kayode, ambassador-designate to Germany, Reno Omokri, ambassador-designate to Israel, and Dele Momodu, publisher of Ovation magazine, traded sharp barbs over loyalty to President Bola Tinubu.
The feud began after Momodu labelled Tinubu a “dictator” during an interview on Channels Television and hinted at aligning with the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Fani-Kayode hit back, accusing Momodu of having an “inferiority complex” and diminishing political relevance.
“Dele Momodu, you are too immature for politics. Please focus on hyping fading #BBNaija contestants!” he wrote, urging Momodu to “stay in your lane and leave politics to those with thicker skin.”
He defended his support for Tinubu, highlighting his own political shift from former President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2021.
Fani-Kayode also recalled Momodu’s historical ties to the late MKO Abiola, claiming the publisher had betrayed Abiola’s legacy.
Omokri joined the fray, cautioning against a potential Atiku Abubakar–Peter Obi presidential ticket in 2027.
He argued that religious sensitivities in the north would render such a pairing politically unviable.
“If Waziri Atiku Abubakar listens to Dele Momodu and runs with Obi, he may lose even in Adamawa!” Omokri said.
Momodu responded with detailed rebuttals, accusing Fani-Kayode and Omokri of “hypocrisy and perfidy.”
He rejected claims of begging for reconciliation, highlighting previous professional favors done for Fani-Kayode through Ovation magazine.
He described Fani-Kayode as “a bully” and “a classic case of a wasted investment.”
On politics, Momodu insisted he never called Tinubu a murderer or drug baron, standing only by the “dictatorship” label. He accused both men of switching allegiances for political appointments while previously attacking Tinubu.
The online spat has drawn wide reactions.
Former presidential spokesperson Tolu Ogunlesi described the feud as a “formidable non-diplomatic coalition against a veteran journalist,” warning it could overshadow President Tinubu’s historic UK state visit.
Ogunlesi advised neutrality, stressing the heated exchange is a spectacle in which no one should take sides.
