One killed, many injured as Iranian drones strike Abu Dhabi, Dubai airports
At least one person has been killed and several others injured after parts of major airports in the United Arab Emirates, including facilities in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, were hit during a wave of missile and drone attacks launched by Iran late Saturday.
Authorities confirmed that the attacks affected key aviation facilities, including Dubai International Airport and Zayed International Airport, causing casualties and disruption to flight operations.
In a statement posted on Sunday, airport authorities confirmed that four people were injured following an incident at Dubai International Airport after emergency services responded and treated victims at the scene. Flight operations were temporarily suspended following the incident.
Officials in Abu Dhabi also confirmed that one person, identified as an Asian national, was killed after debris from an intercepted drone fell near Zayed International Airport.
Seven others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Authorities said air defence systems engaged dozens of incoming missiles and drones launched from Iran, noting that most of the projectiles were successfully intercepted before reaching their intended targets.
Despite the interceptions, falling debris caused limited damage and casualties in several locations, including areas near airports and residential districts.
UAE authorities subsequently shut down parts of the country’s airspace and halted flight operations at major aviation hubs, leaving thousands of travellers stranded as airlines cancelled or delayed scheduled services.
The attacks come amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, with Iranian forces reportedly launching retaliatory strikes following coordinated military actions by the United States and Israel against Iranian targets earlier in the conflict.
