Tears as female Corps Member dies after drilling in Borno NYSC camp

A female corps member serving at the Nigeria Youth Service Corps (NYSC) temporary orientation camp in Maiduguri, Borno State, has died after reportedly falling ill, with officials clarifying that her death did not occur during evening drills.

The corps member, whose identity has been withheld, was said to have died on Monday evening at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital after being rushed from the camp.

Confirming the incident, the NYSC State Coordinator, Nasir Bello, stated that the deceased arrived at the camp with an underlying medical condition and had not participated in any physical activities since her registration.

“She died in the teaching hospital, not during drills. She reported to camp, and unfortunately, she has an underlying ailment,” Bello said.

He explained that the corps member was assisted by clinic officials from the moment she arrived at the camp and was exempted from camp drills due to her health condition. Bello also declined to disclose the nature of the illness, advising that medical details should be obtained from the hospital.

However, conflicting accounts emerged from sources within the camp, some of whom suggested that she collapsed shortly after evening drills before being taken to the clinic and later transferred to the teaching hospital, where she was confirmed dead.

A security official within the camp, who spoke anonymously, said the deceased collapsed in her hostel after the day’s activities and was immediately attended to before being referred to the hospital.

Another corps member alleged that the deceased may have been diabetic, claiming that her medication was allegedly seized at the camp gate upon arrival and that she may not have been consistent with her treatment.

The NYSC authorities have not confirmed these claims, while the circumstances surrounding her death remain under review.

The incident has sparked concerns among corps members over health screening, medical support, and emergency response systems within orientation camps across the country.
