Tinubu orders NIMC to enrol all Nigerians for NIN before end of 2026
President Bola Tinubu has directed the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to ensure that every Nigerian is enrolled in the country’s national identity database before the end of 2026.
The directive was disclosed by the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.
According to her, the Federal Government is intensifying efforts to expand the National Identification Number (NIN) registration exercise to ensure every Nigerian is captured in the national identity database.
Coker-Odusote revealed that 137,371,080 Nigerians have already been enrolled, describing the figure as a major milestone while stressing that the government is determined to register every eligible citizen.
She said President Tinubu has directed the commission to extend registration beyond urban centres and take the exercise directly to communities nationwide.
> “We are now mandated by the President that we should go down to the community level and enroll every single Nigerian. The President has given us till the end of this year to make sure that we capture every single Nigerian,” she said.
The NIMC boss added that the commission is implementing measures to make registration more accessible, particularly for people living in remote and underserved communities.
She also disclosed that NIMC is partnering with organisations under the World Bank-backed Identification for Development (ID4D) initiative to strengthen the country’s identity system, improve data collection infrastructure and accelerate nationwide enrolment.
The Federal Government says a comprehensive national identity database will enhance access to government services, improve security, deepen financial inclusion and strengthen national planning.
The NIN has already been integrated with several public services, including telecommunications, banking and social intervention programmes, as part of efforts to establish a unified identity system for Nigerians.
