Tinubu warns against do-or-die politics, urges APC members to maintain unity, sportsmanship as primaries begin
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged members of the All Progressives Congress to uphold unity, peace and sportsmanship as the party begins its nationwide primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement marking the commencement of the primaries, Tinubu described the exercise as a major test of the party’s unity, resilience and strength.
According to him, the primaries, which begin with House of Representatives contests and end with the presidential primary on May 25, are beyond the selection of candidates.
“They are a referendum on our unity, resilience and strength as a party. They present an opportunity to renew the bond and ideals that we share,” the President stated.
Tinubu commended ongoing consensus arrangements within the party, describing them as a useful mechanism for reducing tension and division among members.
However, he stressed that where consensus fails, aspirants and supporters must conduct themselves peacefully and democratically.
“We cannot afford rancorous conduct or the debasement of our democracy and party unity,” he said.
The President advised winners not to celebrate excessively and urged those who lose to accept the outcome in good faith and remain committed to the party.
“Our opponents are waiting for us to be against each other; we should disappoint them,” Tinubu added.
He also directed party leaders, governors and officials to provide a level playing field for all aspirants and called for greater inclusion of women and youths in the political process.
Tinubu further charged security agencies, particularly the police, to remain professional and focus strictly on ensuring peaceful conduct during the primaries.
