WAFCON 2026: Nigeria vs Malawi – match date, kick-off time, streaming details

Nigeria’s Super Falcons will kick off the defence of their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title with a Group C clash against tournament debutants Malawi on Tuesday in Rabat, Morocco.

The reigning African champions are aiming to secure a record-extending 11th WAFCON title under head coach Justine Madugu.

Nigeria reclaimed the continental crown in 2025 after a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over hosts Morocco in the final, earning what is officially recognised as their 10th WAFCON title.

Some historical records also include the 1991 and 1995 African Women’s Championships, bringing the team’s overall continental tally to 12.

Tuesday’s encounter will take place in Rabat, the same city where the Super Falcons produced one of the tournament’s most remarkable comebacks.

Trailing Morocco by two goals in last year’s final, the Nigerian side staged a stunning fightback to win 3-2 and lift the coveted trophy.

The expanded 2026 tournament, which features 16 teams, also doubles as a qualifier for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with the four semi-finalists guaranteed places at the tournament in Brazil.

Nigeria was drawn alongside Zambia, Egypt and debutants Malawi in Group C, meaning Madugu’s side will be expected to make a strong start against the Scorchers before facing the more experienced Zambia and Egypt.

A victory would give Madugu’s side the ideal start, while another strong WAFCON campaign would move the Falcons closer to another continental title and a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

What to expect from the Super Falcons

Nigeria head into the tournament as the defending champions and the most successful team in the history of the competition.

The Falcons have a squad packed with established international stars, including captain Rasheedat Ajibade, goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, forward Asisat Oshoala, Michelle Alozie, Christy Ucheibe, Jennifer Echegini, Toni Payne, Esther Okoronkwo, Gift Monday and Deborah Abiodun.

Ajibade is expected to be central to Nigeria’s attacking play and leadership, while Nnadozie’s presence in goal provides experience behind a defence that will need to remain alert against Malawi’s pace in attack.

Oshoala, meanwhile, brings the experience of a six-time African Women’s Footballer of the Year and remains one of the most recognisable figures in African women’s football.

The Super Falcons will, however, be without defender Ashleigh Plumptre, who continues her recovery from a long-term injury.

Nigeria’s preparations included a 2-1 victory over Tanzania in their final warm-up match, while players Abiodun and Monday reportedly overcame travel delays to join the squad in Morocco.

Head-to-head

Nigeria has faced Malawi only twice at the senior women’s international level, with the meetings coming during qualification for the 2014 African Women’s Championship, which also served as a route to the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The first meeting, in Blantyre on June 9, 2012, ended in a 1-1 draw.

Nigeria won the return leg 2-0 in Abuja on September 7, 2013, leaving the Falcons unbeaten in the two encounters.

Overall, Nigeria have won once and drawn once against Malawi, scoring three goals and conceding one.

Players to watch

Rasheedat Ajibade — Nigeria

The captain will be one of the key figures in Nigeria’s attempt to defend their crown. Her versatility, creativity and leadership make her an important outlet in attack, while her experience at the highest level gives the Falcons a reliable presence in crucial moments.

Chiamaka Nnadozie — Nigeria

Nnadozie has become one of the most highly regarded goalkeepers in women’s football and will be crucial if Malawi succeeds in launching counter-attacks. Her shot-stopping ability and command of the penalty area could be particularly important against Temwa and Tabitha Chawinga.

Asisat Oshoala — Nigeria

One of Africa’s most decorated women’s footballers, with a record six African Women’s Player of the Year award wins, Oshoala brings tournament experience and a proven record of scoring goals. Her movement and physical presence could give Malawi’s defence a difficult night.

Jennifer Echegini — Nigeria

Echegini offers creativity and attacking intelligence in midfield and will be expected to help Nigeria break down a Malawi side that could sit deep for long periods.

Temwa Chawinga — Malawi

The Kansas City Current forward is arguably Malawi’s biggest threat. Her pace and finishing have made her one of the most dangerous attackers in the women’s game, and Nigeria cannot afford to give her space behind the defence.

Tabitha Chawinga — Malawi

The Lyon forward brings experience, technical quality and a strong understanding with her sister. Her ability to link play and create opportunities could be vital if Malawi is to cause an upset.
