Yobe Hisbah bans male–female from sitting close in public transport, social gatherings
The Yobe State Hisbah Commission has announced a ban on the intermingling of males and females in public transportation and social gatherings across the state.
The directive, which took effect from January 6, was issued by the commission’s coordinator, Muhammad Yahudi, and aims to enforce moral conduct in line with Islamic teachings, according to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Under the new rules, men and women are prohibited from sitting together in public vehicles or mingling freely at gatherings. The commission also barred what it described as “isolated discussions” between males and females that contradict Islamic principles.
In addition to the gender-related restrictions, the Hisbah Commission warned against reckless driving and overspeeding by motorists and tricycle operators, particularly during Sallah festivities and wedding celebrations.
In a statement signed by Yahudi, the commission said the measures were introduced to promote public safety, peace, and moral discipline in the state.
“The Yobe State Hisbah Commission, under the chairmanship of Dr Yahuza Hassan Abubakar, hereby informs the general public that reckless driving and overspeeding during Sallah and wedding celebrations are strictly prohibited,” the statement read.
It further stated that the intermingling of males and females in public transport and gatherings, as well as inappropriate private discussions between both genders, would no longer be tolerated.
The commission urged residents and visitors to strictly adhere to the directives, stressing that compliance is necessary to uphold Islamic values and maintain social order across Yobe State.
The Hisbah Commission said the regulations apply statewide and warned that appropriate measures would be taken to ensure enforcement.
