10 things to know about Gen. Christopher Musa, newly appointed Defence Minister
General Christopher Gwabin Musa OFR, is a retired Nigerian Army officer and former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) who has been appointed as Nigeria’s new Defence Minister by President Bola Tinubu.
His appointment follows the resignation of Mohammed Badaru, who stepped down due to health-related challenges, marking yet another significant chapter in Musa’s long and distinguished career in national security.
Here are key things to know about the retired general now taking on one of the country’s most sensitive roles.
1. Background
Gen. Musa was born on 25 December 1967 in Sokoto but hails from Zangon Kataf in Southern Kaduna State.
2. A seasoned military officer
Gen. Musa is a retired four-star general who served as Nigeria’s 18th Chief of Defence Staff from June 2023 to October 2025.
3. Trained at the Nigerian Defence Academy
Musa joined the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1986 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree before being commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1991.
4. Nearly four decades in military service
He spent almost 40 years in the Nigerian Army, rising through the ranks with postings in operations, administration, policy and command.
5. Distinguished military experience
He led major security operations, including serving as Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai in the fight against insurgency in the North-East.
6. Experience in multinational security operations
Musa also commanded Sector 3 of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), working with forces from Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon.
7. Extensive international training
His career includes advanced courses from the Armed Forces Command and Staff College Jaji, the National Defence University in China, and the US Army War College.
8. Recipient of numerous awards
He holds several honours, including the Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR), the Colin Powell Meritorious Award for Soldiering and multiple military medals.
9. Traditional titles
In December 2023, he received the title Tswung Atyap, meaning “Pillar of Atyap”, from the Atyap Chiefdom in Southern Kaduna.
10. Recent appointment
He was nominated to replace Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, who resigned, making Musa the new face of Nigeria’s defence leadership.
