Soldiers kill Corps Member in Abuja during anti-robbery operation

A serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, National Youth Service Corps corps member Abdulsamad Jamiu, has been killed during a military operation in Dei-Dei, Abuja, in an incident that has sparked conflicting accounts between the army and the victim’s family.

The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Saturday at Shagari Estate when troops of the Guards Brigade Quick Response team responded to a distress call about an armed robbery attack.

In a statement, the Nigerian Army said its troops were deployed to the scene and came under fire from fleeing suspects, leading to what it described as a brief exchange of gunfire. The army stated that Jamiu was caught in the crossfire and later died from his injuries despite efforts to save him.

The Guards Brigade said the situation was “fluid and highly volatile” and confirmed that the body had been handed over to authorities at Kubwa General Hospital. It also expressed condolences to the family and said an internal investigation has been launched.

However, a source reportedly close to the deceased’s family has disputed the military’s account, alleging that there was no exchange with armed robbers and that soldiers fired indiscriminately when they arrived at the estate.

According to the source, residents are demanding an independent investigation, insisting that the army’s explanation does not reflect what actually happened on the ground.

The NYSC has yet to issue an official statement on the incident, while public concern continues to grow over the circumstances surrounding the corps member’s death.
