Woman arrested after setting husband, co-wife and children ablaze in Kano
The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 32-year-old housewife for allegedly setting her co-wife’s room on fire, an incident that left four people with varying degrees of burns in Mangwarori Quarters, Mariri, Kano State.
Police spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday, noting that the command received a distress call on May 12, 2026, at about 0040hrs.
According to the statement, the suspect, identified as Maryam Usman, allegedly set fire to the room occupied by her co-wife, Firdausi Saminu, 40.
Those affected by the fire include Firdausi Saminu, her two children — Isma’il Saminu (3) and Khadija Saminu (5) — as well as their father, Saminu Miko.
“All victims were immediately evacuated to Sir Sunusi Specialist Hospital, Kano, where they are currently receiving medical attention,” the police statement added.
The command said patrol teams responded swiftly to the scene and arrested the suspect, who is currently in custody at Mariri Division. Exhibits were also recovered as investigation commenced.
The case is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Bompai, for discreet investigation and possible prosecution for mischief by fire and attempted culpable homicide.
Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, condemned the incident, describing it as “criminal, inhuman, and unacceptable,” while ordering a thorough and expedited investigation to ensure justice.
He also assured that the victims would receive necessary protection and support throughout the legal process.
