Trump misses son’s wedding, cites White House duties, Iran crisis
United States President, Donald Trump, has announced that he will not attend the wedding of his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., citing pressing government responsibilities and ongoing international developments, particularly involving Iran.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said remaining in Washington, D.C., during what he described as an important period for the United States was more important than attending the family event.
“While I very much wanted to be with my son, Don Jr., and the newest member of the Trump Family, his soon-to-be wife, Bettina, circumstances pertaining to Government, and my love for the United States of America, do not allow me to do so. I feel it is important for me to remain in Washington, D.C., at the White House during this important period of time,” Trump stated.
The wedding of Trump Jr. and Palm Beach socialite Bettina Anderson is scheduled to take place this weekend in the Bahamas. Reports indicate that the couple have already legally married ahead of the private ceremony.
Speaking earlier about the event, Trump acknowledged that his son wanted him present but said the timing was difficult because of ongoing diplomatic and security concerns.
“He’d like me to go. I said, ‘You know, this is not good timing for me. I have a thing called Iran and other things,’” Trump remarked.
The President also joked that he would face criticism regardless of his decision.
“If I do attend, I get killed. If I don’t attend, I get killed by the fake news, of course,” he said.
Trump’s decision comes amid heightened tensions involving Iran. Earlier this week, he disclosed that the United States had suspended a planned military strike against Iran after appeals from leaders of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, who said fresh negotiations were underway and could produce an agreement that would prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
The White House has not indicated whether Trump’s schedule could change before the wedding weekend. However, the President has made it clear that he intends to remain in Washington as diplomatic efforts concerning Iran continue.
