Reps extend 2025 capital budget implementation to September
The House of Representatives has approved an extension of the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 budget, moving the deadline from June 30, 2026, to September 30, 2026.
The decision was reached during an emergency plenary session held on Monday.
Leading the debate on the bill, House Leader, Julius Ihonvbere, explained the need to extend the lifespan of the capital expenditure aspect of the 2025 Appropriation Act.
Lawmakers subsequently considered and approved the proposal, giving government agencies additional time to complete ongoing capital projects and fully utilise funds allocated under the budget.
The extension is expected to support the execution of critical infrastructure and development projects that may not have been completed before the initial June 30 deadline.
Ihonvbere stressed that substantial funds released to Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, MDAs, remained unspent due to administrative bottlenecks, procurement delays and implementation challenges.
According to him, the extended window aims to prevent the abandonment of critical infrastructural projects across the country, allow time for ongoing projects to be finished, and settle outstanding obligations.
The notice of the emergency sitting was issued by the Acting Clerk of the House of Representatives, Ibrahim Sidi, in a memo sent to all members on Sunday.
He said the sitting was pursuant to Order Five, Rule 2 sub-section 2 of the Standing Orders of the House of Representatives
