PDP crisis deepens as Wike-backed faction holds parallel BoT meeting in Abuja

A fresh wave of internal tension swept through the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Sunday as a faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, convened a parallel Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting in Abuja.

The gathering, held in the nation’s capital, is another clear signal of the deepening cracks within the opposition party, long polarised between two dominant blocs struggling for control of the PDP’s soul.

Presiding over the meeting, Mao Ohuabunwa, chairman of the factional BoT, declared that the party must urgently rebuild confidence among its members by addressing long-standing organisational lapses, particularly in states where congresses have stalled.

Ohuabunwa said the party’s national leadership is now determined to work closely with state chapters to install new executives, rebuild internal structures, and stabilise the PDP ahead of crucial political engagements.

According to him, conducting overdue congresses and consolidating the party’s modest achievements remain central to restoring order, unity and transparency at the grassroots level.

“The task before us is to return this party to its rightful position. We must support the national leadership and ensure that congresses are conducted where necessary. This is how we rebuild trust and bring the party back on course,” Ohuabunwa said.

The PDP remains sharply divided between the Wike-backed faction led by Abdulrahman Mohammed, and the Kabiru Turaki-led bloc supported by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed.

The supremacy battle between the two groups has continued to shape the party’s internal dynamics, raising concerns over its readiness for the contests ahead.
