Two Officers flee Nigeria over links to alleged coup plot, 30 others on detention
Two Nigerian military officers have reportedly gone into hiding after being named among those accused of plotting to overthrow the government and end Nigeria’s democracy.
Very Nigeria reports that authorities have intensified efforts to arrest more suspects following the interrogation of 16 officers earlier detained in connection with the failed coup attempt in early October.
It was gathered that 18 officers were initially marked for arrest, but two escaped and are now believed to have fled the country.
One of the fugitives, Major J.M. Ganaks, with service number N/14363, hails from the Federal Capital Territory and belongs to the 58th Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA).
He was reportedly stationed in Jaji, Kaduna State before going into hiding.
The second officer, Captain G. Binuga, with service number N/167722, is from Taraba State and was posted to DHQ SOF Bida in Niger State.
He was a member of the 64th Regular Course of the NDA.
Sources disclosed that some of the arrested officers have already provided “useful information” to investigators, leading to further arrests.
It is now believed that more than 30 officers are currently in detention.
While some of the suspects are said to be uncooperative, many others have reportedly been “very helpful” during questioning.
Contrary to earlier reports, the coup attempt was not planned for October 1, as arrests only began during the first week of the month.
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has yet to issue an official statement confirming the alleged plot, but it maintained that the ongoing interrogation of 16 officers is part of “a routine internal process aimed at ensuring discipline and professionalism within the ranks.”
