EFCC drags Peace Corps Commandant, Finance Director to Court over N60m

The Abuja Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday, December 11, 2025, arraigned the Commandant of the Nigeria Peace Corps, Dickson Akon, alongside the Corps’ Director of Finance, Omolala Aminat Ahmed, over allegations of criminal misappropriation of funds totalling N60 million.

The duo appeared before Justice H. B. Yusuf of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja, where they faced a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and dishonest conversion of public funds.

According to the charge sheet, the EFCC alleges that the defendants, in 2024, entered an agreement to commit an illegal act, specifically the misappropriation of funds allocated to the Corps.

The second count accuses them of dishonestly converting N46 million out of the N60 million earmarked for the procurement of badges, diverting the funds for personal use.

Both Akon and Ahmed pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to them in open court, prompting the prosecution counsel, Khalid Sanusi, to request a trial date.

Justice Yusuf, in a brief ruling, adjourned the matter to February 25, 2026, for the commencement of trial.

The judge granted each defendant bail in the sum of N5 million, with a surety in like sum.

The sureties, the court ruled, must be reputable individuals residing in Abuja.

The arraignment has sparked fresh scrutiny of financial management within the Peace Corps structure, an organisation that has long courted controversy over its operations, funding sources and internal accountability.

As the legal process unfolds, the case is expected to test the EFCC’s resolve in tackling alleged financial breaches within paramilitary-style organisations, many of which operate in grey zones between state recognition and private structuring.
