Super Falcons fall 1-0 to Cameroon in pre-WAFCON friendly
Nigeria women’s national football team suffered a narrow 1–0 defeat to the Cameroon women’s national football team in an international friendly played at the Stade Militaire de Yaoundé on Saturday.
The pre-2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) warm-up match was decided in stoppage time after Yvana Mbomezomo struck a late winner to hand Cameroon victory.
Head coach Justin Madugu handed opportunities to new players, with Comfort Erhabor making her international debut in goal, while Precious Christopher also earned her first cap after coming on as a second-half substitute.
Cameroon created the first clear chance of the match following a defensive error, but Erhabor produced a brilliant point-blank save to keep the Super Falcons level.
Nigeria gradually settled into the game and dominated possession for long periods but failed to convert several scoring opportunities, with poor decision-making in the final third denying the team a breakthrough.
Just as the match appeared headed for a draw, Cameroon launched a late attack from the flank, ending with Mbomezomo firing a first-time volley into the top corner to seal victory in added time.
The result marked Nigeria’s first defeat to Cameroon in their last eight meetings and also ended an 11-match unbeaten run that stretched back to a 2–1 friendly loss to France in November 2024.
Both teams are scheduled to meet again on March 3 in the second match of the two-game friendly series.
