Reps amend Electoral Act, impose N10m fine for dual party membership

The House of Representatives has amended the Electoral Act 2026 to criminalise membership in more than one political party at the same time.

Under the new provision approved by the lawmakers, any individual found guilty of belonging to two or more political parties simultaneously will be liable to a fine of ₦10 million.

The amendment was passed by the green chamber during Wednesday’s plenary session as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s electoral framework and discourage political irregularities.

The House also proscribed a maximum prison term of two years for offenders.
