Army recovers remains of soldiers killed en route to wedding in Imo
Troops of the Nigerian Army have recovered the remains of two soldiers who were killed in 2022 while travelling for their traditional wedding in Imo State, bringing a painful chapter closer to closure after nearly four years.
The victims, Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Lance Corporal Gloria Mathew, were reportedly abducted and murdered along the Ubaha–Orsu axis by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
According to security sources, the couple had set out in April 2022 for what was meant to be a joyous family event — their traditional wedding — before their journey turned tragic.
The two personnel, described by colleagues as disciplined and devoted, had maintained a long-distance relationship due to postings in different parts of the country but were united by plans to begin a new life together.
Following years of search efforts, troops of the 82 Division, working alongside other security agencies, launched a targeted clearance operation on April 24, 2026, based on fresh intelligence pointing to possible burial sites.
The operation reportedly met stiff resistance, as troops came under heavy fire from armed elements who attempted to repel them through ambushes and coordinated attacks.
Despite the confrontation, the soldiers advanced, overpowered the attackers, and proceeded to search the area.
Their efforts led to the discovery of shallow graves believed to contain the remains of the slain personnel. The remains have since been exhumed and are to undergo forensic examination for proper identification.
The recovery marks a significant moment for the families and colleagues of the deceased, as well as the military, which had continued quiet efforts over the years to locate and honour the fallen soldiers.
