BREAKING: Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso, others lead “Save Nigeria Democracy” protest in Abuja
Prominent leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) spearheaded the “Save Nigeria Democracy” protest in Abuja on Tuesday, as demonstrators marched through the city streets to express concerns over alleged electoral partisanship.
Chieftains of the party, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, ex-Senate President David Mark, and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, among others, led the march from Maitama Roundabout toward the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The protest is directed at what ADC leaders described as the electoral body’s alleged alignment with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which they claim threatens the country’s democratic processes.
Some demonstrators carried placards with inscriptions such as “Hands off our courts,” reflecting public concern over perceived interference in judicial and electoral matters. Amaechi addressed protesters from a van as the march progressed through the capital.
On his X handle, Atiku shared images and videos from the march, stating, “Myself and other leaders of the ADC are peacefully protesting against the partisanship of the electoral umpire. Our patriotic stance is aimed at safeguarding our democracy and preventing the enthronement of a dictatorship.”
Peter Obi, former Anambra State Governor and ADC chieftain, called on well-meaning Nigerians to join the demonstration, emphasizing the need to oppose a one-party system. “We say NO to a one-party system and for that today we’re calling out Nigerians who believe in unity, peace, and security of our country to join us as we defend democracy in our land,” he wrote on X.
Photographs and videos from the event showed Obi, Kwankwaso, and other party leaders holding a banner reading, “Tinubu, let our democracy breathe,” as the protest continued.
The ADC’s demonstration underscores growing tension over the perceived neutrality of INEC and reflects the party’s commitment to what it describes as defending democratic norms in Nigeria. Further updates on the protest and responses from INEC are expected.
