BREAKING: Court sentence IPOB Leader, Nnamdi Kanu, to life imprisonment for terrorism
Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court on Thursday sentenced Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to life imprisonment after a decade-long trial.
The judgement comes four years after Kanu was arrested in Kenya under controversial circumstances and brought back to Nigeria, where he faced seven terrorism-related charges.
The ruling was delivered in Kanu’s absence, following his insistence that the court could not proceed with the terrorism case.
His repeated disruptions prompted the judge to order security operatives to remove him from the courtroom for “unruly behaviour.”
Justice Omotosho held that multiple broadcasts by Kanu on Radio Biafra constituted acts of terrorism, noting that his rhetoric and directives were rooted in violence.
The judge also declared that Kanu’s sit-at-home orders in South-Eastern states amounted to terrorism, as they infringed on residents’ freedom of movement and violated constitutional provisions.
The court further found that Kanu had engaged in preparatory acts of terrorism through his broadcasts, including calls that encouraged the killing of police and military officers.
Ultimately, the court convicted Kanu on all seven counts, despite his plea of not guilty, affirming that he committed acts of terrorism against the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
