BREAKING: Fayose releases documents alleging Gov Makinde received ₦50bn support from Tinubu
Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has released documents he claims are evidence that Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, received ₦50 billion from the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The documents were made public on Sunday following days of public exchanges between both politicians over the alleged receipt of the funds.
Fayose said the money was approved as emergency intervention after the deadly Ibadan explosion of January 2024, which claimed lives and destroyed properties in parts of the Oyo State capital.
The development comes after Governor Makinde had denied receiving ₦50 billion, publicly challenging Fayose to provide proof to substantiate the allegation.
In response, Fayose released what he described as official financial records, insisting that the documents show both the approval and release of the funds to the Oyo State Government.
According to the former Ekiti governor, only ₦4.5 billion out of the alleged ₦50 billion was disbursed to victims of the Ibadan explosion. He alleged that the balance was diverted for political purposes.
Fayose further accused Makinde of using the funds to finance a presidential ambition, linking the alleged diversion to the internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Oyo governor’s repeated criticism of President Tinubu’s administration.
In a personally signed statement, Fayose said he decided to make the documents public to allow Nigerians judge the matter independently, insisting that the records contradict the Oyo State Government’s position.
He challenged Governor Makinde to seek legal redress if any of the claims were false, stating that he was prepared to defend his allegations in court.
Beyond the ₦50 billion claim, Fayose alleged that other financial interventions sent to Oyo State by the Tinubu-led Federal Government were never disclosed to the public, adding that documentary evidence exists to support the claim.
The former governor also claimed to be in possession of documents showing the actual Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of Oyo State, which he said differs from figures consistently announced by the Makinde administration.
He added that some documents were deliberately being withheld for now but could be released if necessary.
“Meanwhile, only ₦4.5bn was released to victims of the Ibadan explosion. Rather, he diverted this fund and many others to his presidential ambition, which is the reason for the crisis in the PDP and his attacks on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his government,” Fayose said.
He added: “There are documentary evidences on the actual Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of Oyo State, as against Governor Makinde’s claim, but we will keep our gunpowder dry for now. My name is still Ayo Fayose, I don’t say what I can’t prove.”
As of the time of filing this report, the Oyo State Government has yet to issue an official response to the newly released documents.
