No fewer than 30 miners have died, while 25 others were rushed to hospital on Wednesday after inhaling carbon monoxide at a mining site in Wase Local Government Area.

Eyewitnesses said the victims, mostly young men between the ages of 20 and 35, suddenly collapsed while carrying out routine work underground.

Some of those injured were said to be in critical condition and are receiving treatment at a nearby primary health centre.

A miner in Wase, Haruna Safiyanu, told reporters that toxic gas had built up inside poorly ventilated tunnels, causing several workers to lose consciousness.

The tragic incident has raised fresh concerns about safety standards at mining sites in Plateau State.

Rescue teams, assisted by mining site personnel, quickly cordoned off the area and evacuated survivors for urgent medical attention.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the gas build-up and working to prevent further incidents.
