‘Federal might won’t work in 2027 elections, Nigerians will show politicians pepper’ — Gov Makinde
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has expressed confidence that the outcome of the 2027 general elections will not be influenced by what he described as “federal might,” insisting that Nigerians will freely determine their leaders.
Makinde made the remark on Wednesday at the Oyo State Tourism Summit held at the University of Ibadan International Conference Centre (ICC), where he said voters have become more politically conscious and determined to participate actively in the electoral process.
“I believe that this election cycle, federal might will not work. It has worked in Ekiti state in both instances but this time around, Nigerians will show politicians pepper,” he said.
“They will show us that they don’t want to be bystanders anymore; they will participate, and I’m sure of what I’m saying.”
The governor also spoke on governance succession in Oyo State, noting that while he may recommend a successor, the final decision rests with the electorate.
Makinde warned against electing leaders without the capacity to govern effectively, stressing that poor leadership decisions could have long-lasting consequences.
“It is a one-day event, but the impact will last four years. So, we must get it right. Leadership changes but systems endure,” he said.
Amid growing political speculation over possible successors, Makinde maintained that his administration would support any credible candidate who is loyal to the state and capable of delivering effective governance.
Responding to questions about alleged anointed candidates, he said inclusivity and competence would guide his position, rather than party sentiment or political alignment.
“For us, if you’re from Oyo State, loyal to Oyo State, and have capacity, we will support you,” he said.
Makinde added that his administration is focused on building strong institutions and systems that will ensure continuity beyond his tenure, rather than governance that depends on individuals.
He reiterated that his government is laying a foundation aimed at sustaining development and strengthening long-term growth in the state.
