Four pilots killed as two military aircraft collide mid-air in Philippines
Four pilots have died after two military training aircraft crashed mid-air at an air base in the Philippines, the country’s air force has confirmed.
The incident involved two SF-260 single-engine propeller aircraft at Fernando Air Base, south of Manila, on Friday afternoon.
According to the Philippine Air Force, both aircraft crashed within the base’s boundaries, killing all four pilots on board.
“Both aircraft went down within the base perimeter, with no other casualties reported,” Philippine Air Force spokesman Colonel Alvin Capinguian said in a statement issued on Saturday.
The air force has not provided further details about the cause of the crash.
An investigation was opened to determine the cause of the mishap, and Capinguian said the air force’s fleet of SF-260s has been temporarily grounded as a precaution.
There have been a number of deadly crashes involving Philippine military aircraft in recent years.
