Gbenga Daniel withdraws from APC Senate race, directs supporters to shun primaries

Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District, Gbenga Daniel, has withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primary scheduled for Monday, citing alleged threats of violence against his supporters.

Daniel, who is seeking re-election, has been locked in a political dispute with Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun over the control of the party structure and the APC ticket in Ogun East.

The disagreement between both political blocs has reportedly intensified in recent weeks, with accusations and counter-accusations from loyalists on both sides.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Bola Ahmed Tinubu–Otunba Gbenga Daniel (BATOGD) Movement, Daniel directed his supporters to boycott the primary election, alleging security threats and suspicious movements ahead of the exercise.

The statement claimed that the presence of miscreants and alleged threats from political actors had created fears of violence, making participation unsafe for his supporters.

“We have seen all manners of strange movements and miscreants taking positions and ready to strike down our people,” the statement read.

The group further advised supporters to stay away from the venues of the senatorial primary for their safety.

Speaking to journalists, Daniel’s media aide, Steve Oliyide, confirmed the withdrawal, stating that the decision was taken to prevent any harm to supporters.

“Yes, because we cannot put our supporters in harm’s way,” he said, adding that the group remained open to participation if safety and fairness could be guaranteed.

The development adds a fresh layer of tension to the APC primaries in Ogun State as the party continues preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
