Group urges Tinubu to nominate Goodluck Jonathan for UN Secretary-General

Goodluck Jonathan has been urged to be nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the position of United Nations Secretary-General.

The call was made by the African Policy and Research Consortium (APRC), which argued that Jonathan possesses the leadership experience, diplomatic credentials and democratic record required to lead the world’s foremost multilateral organisation.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the consortium’s convener, Prof. Edward Agbai, said the United Nations requires a leader with proven executive experience and the ability to address complex global challenges.

> “The United Nations needs a leader with proven executive experience, democratic credentials, and the ability to manage complex global challenges,” he said.

The group highlighted Jonathan’s tenure as Nigeria’s Vice-President between 2007 and 2010 and President from 2010 to 2015, describing his leadership record as evidence of responsible governance.

APRC also praised Jonathan’s decision to concede defeat after the 2015 presidential election, describing it as a landmark moment that strengthened democracy in Nigeria and demonstrated his commitment to constitutional order and political stability.

According to the consortium, Jonathan has continued to promote democracy, peacebuilding and conflict resolution across Africa since leaving office through election observation and mediation assignments under organisations such as the African Union, Economic Community of West African States, Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, Intergovernmental Authority on Development and the West African Elders Forum.

The group said Jonathan’s emphasis on dialogue, consultation and consensus-building has earned him international recognition, adding that such qualities are essential for a United Nations Secretary-General responsible for mediating conflicts and promoting global cooperation.

APRC further argued that Jonathan’s experience governing Nigeria’s diverse population has equipped him with a deep understanding of global development, security and environmental challenges.

The consortium also maintained that the emergence of an African Secretary-General would strengthen the continent’s influence in global governance.

It urged the Federal Government to begin diplomatic consultations with African countries and other international partners to build support for Jonathan’s potential candidacy.

While acknowledging that the office requires broad international backing, the group said every successful campaign begins with identifying a credible and qualified candidate.

According to APRC, Jonathan’s record in democratic leadership, regional diplomacy and peaceful conflict resolution makes him a strong contender for the position of United Nations Secretary-General.

The consortium therefore called on President Tinubu to support Jonathan’s nomination, arguing that such a move would advance Nigeria’s diplomatic interests while promoting Africa’s quest for greater representation in global institutions.
