The Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Corps, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, has announced that preparations are underway for a mass wedding programme involving 1,500 couples, sponsored by the state government at a cost of ₦1.5 billion.

Daurawa disclosed this while addressing journalists in Kano on Monday, noting that the initiative includes comprehensive pre-marital medical screenings such as HIV, hepatitis, pregnancy tests, and genotype assessments.

He explained that each couple would benefit from approximately ₦1 million, covering household essentials including beds, mattresses, bedsheets, pillows, furniture, and food items.

According to him, the government has also approved a ₦100,000 dowry payment for each bride, alongside an additional ₦100,000 empowerment grant to support small-scale business ventures after marriage.

“Mass wedding was one of the promises made to the people of Kano by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf during his election campaign, and he has now fulfilled it,” Daurawa said.

He added that the total allocation of ₦1.5 billion would ensure proper welfare support for all beneficiaries under the scheme.

Daurawa further disclosed that the Hisbah Corps has introduced guidelines aimed at promoting stability in the marriages, including discouraging divorce without prior consultation with the Hisbah Board.

He also urged intending couples to undergo genotype testing, warning of the health risks associated with sickle cell disease in children born from incompatible unions.

The Hisbah Commander-General said the date for the mass wedding will be announced once it receives final approval from Governor Yusuf.
