Oyo govt declares Tuesday public holiday to mark Islamic New Year
The Oyo State Government has declared Tuesday a work-free day to commemorate and celebrate the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448AH.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Monday in Ibadan by the state Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade.
According to Oyelade, the state government recognises the significance of the Hijrah calendar in the lives of Muslims and considers the celebration an important religious occasion.
He said the holiday would allow Muslim faithful across the state to observe the beginning of the new Islamic year and participate in activities marking the occasion.
The commissioner urged residents to use the period to pray for peace, unity and continued development in Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole.
The Hijrah calendar, which marks the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Makkah to Madinah, serves as the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar and is widely observed by Muslims around the world.
‘Hijrah marks the migration of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD; it is considered a significant event in Islamic history, and it is a time for reflection, prayer, and community spirit.
“As a gesture of respect and solidarity with the Muslim community, the government has declared Tuesday a work-free day in the state,” the commissioner said.
Oyelade urged Muslim faithful to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in the state and the nation.
He called on people in the state to use the opportunity to reflect on the teachings of the Hijrah, pray for the well-being of the state and the nation, and come together in the spirit of solidarity and brotherhood. (NAN) This act of unity is particularly important in fostering understanding and respect among diverse communities. Through shared prayers and communal activities, individuals can strengthen their bonds and promote a sense of harmony that transcends cultural differences.
