Ningi calls for suspension of political activities over rising insecurity
Senator Abdul Ningi has urged the temporary suspension of political activities in states battling persistent terrorist attacks, warning that the deteriorating security situation poses a grave threat to national stability.
Speaking during plenary, the Bauchi lawmaker stressed that the scale and pattern of recent attacks—particularly those targeting security personnel—demand urgent and collective action beyond the executive arm of government.
“This is not a political matter; this affects all of us,” Ningi said, noting a shift in tactics by insurgents who now appear to be targeting highly trained military personnel, especially in northern Nigeria.
He expressed concern that despite claims of ongoing efforts, the reality on ground suggests otherwise. According to him, the response so far has not matched the severity of the threat.
The senator emphasised that tackling insecurity should not be left solely to Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Commander-in-Chief, insisting that the National Assembly must play a more active oversight role.
“This is our responsibility. The Senate must interrogate whether adequate ammunition and funding have been provided for our security forces,” he said.
Ningi warned against complacency among lawmakers, stressing that insecurity in any part of the country ultimately affects all Nigerians, regardless of location.
As part of proposed measures, he suggested a temporary halt to political activities either nationwide or specifically in frontline states such as Borno State, Plateau State, Bauchi State, Benue State, Sokoto State, Kebbi State, and parts of Kano State until security conditions improve.
The call comes amid increasing incidents of violence across northern Nigeria, where both civilians and security operatives have come under sustained attacks, raising fresh concerns about the country’s preparedness ahead of future political activities and elections.
