Premier League: Liverpool draw against Sunderland, Villa come back, + other matches
Aston Villa climbed to third place in the Premier League on Wednesday night after a sensational 4–3 comeback victory away at Brighton, capping off one of the most dramatic evenings of the season so far.
On the same night, Liverpool faltered once again as they were held to a 1–1 draw at Anfield by a spirited Sunderland side, a result that further exposes the champions’ struggle for consistency despite their recent win at West Ham.
Liverpool’s hopes of building momentum from Sunday’s 2–0 triumph evaporated when a careless pass from Virgil van Dijk gifted Sunderland the breakthrough in the 67th minute, with Chemsdine Talbi pouncing to put the visitors ahead.
The Reds were eventually rescued late in the game when Florian Wirtz’s effort took a decisive deflection off Nordi Mukiele, registering as an own-goal.
Sunderland, however, came painfully close to securing their first victory at Anfield since 1983. Deep into stoppage time, Wilson Isidor broke free and seemed destined to score, but Federico Chiesa’s last-ditch clearance on the goal line denied what would have been a historic upset.
At the Amex Stadium, Villa delivered a thrilling fightback to record their eighth win in nine league games.
Brighton had stormed into a 2–0 lead inside half an hour through Jan Paul van Hecke and a Pau Torres own-goal.
But Villa responded emphatically as Ollie Watkins struck twice before the interval, setting the stage for a second-half turnaround completed by Amadou Onana’s towering header and Donyell Malen’s sharp finish to make it 4–2.
Brighton refused to go quietly, with Van Hecke grabbing his second of the night to spark a tense ending, but Villa held firm to hand Roberto De Zerbi’s men their first home defeat of the season.
Elsewhere, Wolves’ struggles persisted after Igor Jesus’ header secured a 1–0 win for Nottingham Forest at Molineux, a result that pushes Sean Dyche’s team three points clear of the relegation zone.
Burnley, meanwhile, remain trapped in the bottom three following a 1–0 defeat to Crystal Palace, with Daniel Munoz’s goal lifting the London side to fifth place.
