Relief as kidnapped Kebbi high court Judge regains freedom
Justice Faruku Bunza of the Kebbi State High Court has been released after spending over a week in the custody of his abductors.
The judge was kidnapped on July 26 from his residence located along Zogirma Road in Bunza Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
His abduction occurred shortly after he arrived home from a trip to Sokoto State.
Although details surrounding his release have not yet been made public, the development brings relief to his family, colleagues and residents who had expressed concern over his safety.
He was released on August 3, 2026.
Confirming the release in a statement on Monday, Bashir Usman, Kebbi police spokesperson, said the family and the state’s ministry of justice confirmed that Bunza has been released.
Usman said the kidnappers demanded ransom, adding that the police command in Kebbi maintains a firm stance against ransom payment.
The Kebbi police spokesperson did not disclose whether the ransom was paid before the release of the judge.
“The Kebbi State Police Command wishes to inform the public that Hon. Justice Faruk Hassan Bunza, a Judge of the Kebbi State High Court who was abducted from his residence in Bunza Local Government Area on 26th July 2026, was released earlier today, 3rd August 2026,” the statement reads.
“His release has been confirmed by his family and the State Ministry of Justice. Although the kidnappers made a ransom demand, the Command maintains its firm stance against ransom payments.
“With the Judge now released, Police and other security agencies have intensified investigative efforts to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
“The Command urges members of the public to provide useful information that could assist in this regard. All information provided will be treated with utmost confidentiality.”
