Security operatives arrest four suspected bandits at Akure Airport
The arrest was confirmed by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, which disclosed that the suspects were apprehended through joint security collaboration.
Four suspected bandits have been arrested by security operatives at the Akure Airport in Ondo State following a coordinated security operation.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed the development in a statement issued late Sunday, noting that the suspects were apprehended through a joint effort involving aviation and local security agencies.
According to FAAN, the individuals were first sighted behind the airport perimeter close to the Eleyewo community, prompting an immediate response from security personnel.
The statement, signed by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Adegbire, said a joint search operation was launched involving Aviation Security (AVSEC), the Nigerian Air Force, the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force, and other local security outfits.
During the operation, the suspects reportedly attempted to flee the area but were eventually apprehended by the security team.
The four suspects have since been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force Area Command for further interrogation.
FAAN commended the swift collaboration among aviation security personnel, the military, police officers and local security groups, including Amotekun and community vigilantes, whose joint efforts led to the successful arrest.
The authority added that the incident underscores the need for stronger protection of airport perimeters, revealing that phased efforts have already commenced to improve security at airports under its control.
FAAN reassured travellers and host communities that it remains committed to maintaining the safety and security of airport facilities across the country.
The arrest comes amid rising security concerns in Ondo State, where gunmen attacks have increased in recent weeks.
Earlier this month, protesters from Ayede Ogbese community in Akure North Local Government Area blocked the Akure–Owo–Benin highway over repeated killings and abductions in the area.
Similarly, residents of Ilu-Abo and nearby communities in the same local government area barricaded the Akure–Owo expressway in protest against growing incidents of kidnapping.
The demonstration escalated when protesters placed the remains of a kidnap victim on the highway while chanting solidarity songs, causing heavy traffic disruption along the major route linking the southern and northern parts of the country.
