President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a six-month extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, in a move aimed at sustaining ongoing reforms within the agency.

The extension was announced on Friday in a statement issued by presidential media aide, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, Adeniyi’s tenure, which was earlier extended by one year in 2025 and expected to expire on August 1, 2026, will now run until February 2027.

The Presidency said the decision is intended to enable the Customs chief to consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window project and ensure a smooth and orderly succession process within the service.

During the extended period, Adeniyi is expected to work with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to oversee the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs, as well as the retirement of officers who have reached 60 years of age or completed 35 years in service.

Adeniyi, who joined the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s, has been at the forefront of key reforms aimed at modernising customs operations and improving trade facilitation.

The Presidency expressed confidence that the extension will help strengthen institutional continuity and enhance efficiency in the service’s reform drive.
