Tinubu hosts Governors, unveils strategy to tackle rising insecurity
President Bola Tinubu has pledged to intensify efforts to tackle insecurity across Nigeria, describing the challenge as a major threat to national development and prosperity.
The President made the commitment on Sunday while hosting Vice President and 23 state governors at his Lagos residence in celebration of Eid-el-Fitr.
Tinubu commended the governors for their presence, noting that it reflected unity, sincerity, and a shared commitment to national progress. He, however, stressed that the country must now confront what he described as the “next phase” of its struggle — insecurity.
“The next phase of our struggle is staring us in the face, and that is the challenge of insecurity in the country,” he said, according to a statement issued by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga.
Reaffirming his administration’s resolve, Tinubu said efforts were ongoing to strengthen both local and international partnerships aimed at improving Nigeria’s security architecture.
He disclosed that discussions during his recent visit to the focused significantly on security cooperation, particularly in the areas of equipment and operational support.
The President further revealed that he had held a “lengthy discussion” with , noting that had agreed to collaborate with Nigeria by providing equipment and training to support the fight against terrorism.
“I am also making frantic efforts to contact other nations,” Tinubu added, signalling broader diplomatic engagement to address security challenges.
Beyond security, the President urged governors to prioritise the welfare of vulnerable citizens, especially in light of the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, which he warned could worsen inflation and reduce purchasing power.
He called on state leaders to implement policies and incentives that would cushion the economic impact of rising energy and transportation costs, particularly as petrol prices continue to surge nationwide.
Tinubu also encouraged governors to remain committed to translating their ideas into tangible policies that directly improve the lives of citizens, while working collectively to defeat criminal elements threatening national stability.
Speaking on behalf of the governors, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, expressed appreciation to the President for his continued support to the states.
He assured that governors across the federation were actively working to address insecurity and are exploring long-term solutions, including ongoing discussions on the establishment of state policing.
AbdulRazaq noted that the forum would present its recommendations on state police to the National Assembly as part of efforts to create a legal framework for decentralised policing.
The meeting brought together governors from across the country, reflecting a united front in addressing Nigeria’s pressing security and economic challenges.
